Adding your own search engines

If you have a basic knowledge of URLs (Internet addresses), you can add your favorite search engines in Turbo Start! Click the Add Engines

button on the Turbo Start toolbar to get going.

You need to know 3 things about an engine to add it:

its name
its home page address
its search address

You would already know the name of the engine. Below, we explain with an example how to get its home page address and search address:

Say you want to add Encarta to Turbo Start. To add a search engine, first go to its home page, eg. http://encarta.msn.com Copy this address from the browser's address bar. This is its home page address.
Next, type in a query in the engine, eg. "india" and copy the address you find in the address bar:
http://encarta.msn.com/find/search.asp?search=india
Remove the query you just entered, so you'll get the standard search address,
http://encarta.msn.com/find/search.asp?search=
which can be used in the future for other searches. This is the search address.
Now use these values to add your engine in the Add Engines dialog box. That's all there is to it! You can use the Category drop-down list to choose the category where you want it to be added.

Editing your engines

To edit a previously added engine, select it from the list of saved engines. Its values will appear on the left, where you can edit them. Press the Save button to save your changes.

Removing your engines

To remove an engine, select it from the list and click on the Remove button.

To add categories, type them one category per line in the Add categories box. Press Enter after each category and type the next category in the next line. See the example at right to get an idea.

When you're satisfied with your changes, press OK to save them. You can also reject your changes by pressing Cancel.

Tips:

You can't have more than 20 search engines in any category.
The search address should be in the format shown above, i.e. it must end with the query field of that engine.
Sometimes, the query value may be in the middle of the address, say, http://search.com/?query=turbo&page=1.
If it is so, you can extract the query pair and put it at the end, like this: http://search.com/?page=1&query=turbo
Then remove your keywords so that it becomes http://search.com/?page=1&query=
Take special note of the & sign - it is a separator between the various name=value pairs
Remember, if you don't get it right the first time - try again. Try changing the code a bit to see if it works.
